Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

It is possible for people who have undertaken professional training as counsellors or psychotherapists to advance their careers and improve their job prospects by gaining a higher level of qualification and/or enhanced professional recognition through the Minster Centre.

If you are seeking:

  • to “top up” your current level of qualification to a higher level such as the Post Graduate Diploma or MA in Psychotherapy
  • registration as a psychotherapist with the UKCP

then you will need to go through a process of Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

This means that we assess the training background and professional development of each applicant in order to evaluate level of study and equivalence of subject matter compared with our validated and accredited courses.

Each person has a different background and so in order to be able to make an initial brief assessment of equivalence and advise what further study might be necessary we need to assess each applicant’s background. Please submit a CV with your enquiry including the following information:

A) Training background
  • Courses followed
  • Qualifications awarded
  • Dates of study
  • Where study was undertaken
  • Any professional registration
B) Personal therapy

  • Orientation of therapist/s
  • Frequency and duration
  • Dates
C) Relevant Professional work
  • Paid employment
  • Voluntary work
  • Private practice
D) What you are hoping to achieve
  • eg MA, UKCP registration

There are a number of different routes by which people can achieve qualification and/or registration and so it is necessary to have an outline of your background before we can give relevant guidance.

Please email your enquiry to meg@minstercentre.org.uk with APL in the subject line.
