CPD - SEXUAL DIVERSITY

Workshop led by Philip Reilly

This one-day course will be run on:

Saturday, 27 February 2010

The importance of a secure and reliable connection to other people who are attuned to what we are feeling and can respond appropriately and creatively is well known. Shame, fear and rejection is a common experience for sexual minority clients both within the family and within society as a whole and the effect upon self-esteem and the ability to connect to others can be deeply damaged.

We will look at:
  • The potential for the therapeutic relationship to develop sufficient trust and safety to enable a different experience of ‘self with other’.
  • Understanding sexual minority clients within the social context. In particular looking at the Lesbian, Gay & bi-sexual experience.
  • Working with sexual minority clients from a non-pathologising perspective.

The aim of this course is to explore the experiences of sexual minority clients (and our attitudes to these) in order to engender a more effective ‘working alliance’. Teaching methods include taught presentation, exploration of LGB experiences, clinical case studies and the implications for practical application.
