CPD
THINKING ABOUT ADDICTION

Workshop led by Martin Pollecoff

This one-day course will be run twice on:

Saturday, 5 December 2009
and
Saturday, 5 June 2010

My purpose is for participants to formulate their own informed and practical psychotherapeutic approach, to alcohol and substance abuse treatment.

To do so we will be comparing and contrasting the philosophy and working practices of ’Twelve Step’ www.aa.org (the approach taken by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous) with the work of ‘Twelve Steps’ major critic - Stanton Peele’ www.peele.net.

We will also be examining the nitty-gritty everyday issues of working with these patient groups such as:

  • Creating a Working Relationship that actually works (why silence is not enough)
  • Managing your own expectations
  • Treatment-planning in our world of limited resources, (here we will be looking at the the figures that predicate your chances of success, plus the Nice Guidelines on Drug Misuse
    http://guidance.nice.org.uk/CG51/NiceGuidance/pdf/English
  • Adult survivors of alcoholic/addicted parents
  • Dual Diagnosis and working in a multi-disciplinary team.
As you may expect from any training based on formulating your own approach; the day will be highly interactive, and you will be expected to work and share in the main group, in smaller groups, and in pairs.

About the Tutor

Martin Pollecoff MSc. CASS, MSc. Psych Int. UKCP

Martin trained in the rough and tumble world of an Alcohol and Substance Abuse clinic in North Wales. It was whilst he was there that he developed an interest in adult survivors of sexual and other childhood abuse, the patient group that forms the mainstay of his West London private practice. He is an honorary psychotherapist with the NHS at the Soho Clinic.

Martin is the founder of www.thelongboathome.co.uk an organisation dedicated to providing reduced-cost therapy for ex-services man and women.
