The experience of exile is one of great upheaval, even if it ultimately results in safety. Increasingly, clinicians are being consulted by refugees and asylum seekers experiencing distress. Making sense of their difficulties in the light of experiences of persecution and organized violence, and in the context of ongoing problems of settlement and safety in the UK can sometimes prove challenging.
In this weekend we will explore:
- The refugee experience and its impact on the individual
- The role of the counsellor or therapist when working with refugees and survivors of violence (the pull towards advocacy, the trauma model and its limitations, bereavement, attachment issues etc. )
- The use of testimony and political narrative in therapeutic work
- The role of language and therapy with interpreter
Teaching methods will include didactic presentation, discussion, experiential exercises and role play. We will also address the practical application of this material.
