INTRODUCTION TO GROUPWORK

Workshop led by Margot Schiemann

This two-day course will run on:

  • 24-25 April 2010
    -or-
  • 15-16 May 2010

As individual therapists or counsellors you may find yourself in the position of being asked to facilitate a group, for example in a Hospital setting, a GP surgery or at a counselling service. This workshop aims to provide an introduction into group work. The weekend will be useful for anybody who wants to know more about groups and for those who are considering working with clients in groups.

We will be exploring different models of group work. This will include the group analytic approach. We are going to reflect on commonly occurring phenomenon in groups, for example phases in group life, who to take into the group and how to think about the therapeutic relationship within a group. We will reflect on the therapeutic setting. Attention will be given to the differences between short-term, long-term and theme-centred groups.

Clinical vignettes from work with groups will form part of the discussions and you are also encouraged to reflect on your own experiences.
